The End of the Ribbon

Anticipatory grief: a feeling of grief occurring before an impending loss. Poem #12 of 31 poems about grief.

I just want to get to the end of the ribbon,
the part thats taped to the spool,
folded neatly,
unmistakably
the end.

I know I have to wait,
it’s not time for that yet.
We're still unspooling our days together,
but I can see more of the spindle starting to show,
and the given ribbon
has disappeared.

If you left now
it might not hurt as much,
I wouldn't be in so deep
like I always am with you.

I just want to get to the end of the ribbon,
before I lose myself
to us.
