read or listen:
I live in the white world
with its invisible fences
that bind us all together.
I know all the white rules
because I was born here.
We’re all about productivity
making things happen.
If you understand that,
know that our religion is really about working
not about God,
you’ll get along fine.
I sleep in the forests at night
just outside the window of the house I bought.
There the trees remember that the world is not white
and that all the important things that happen
have nothing to do with productivity.
I sometimes worry that if I sleep too long in the forest
I’ll forget how to be white
and my children will starve
or maybe they won’t remember me.
I live in the white world
so I can be a father
but I sleep in the forest
so I don’t forget what it means to be alive.
