Last Grief

I run to stop my last grief from taking flight.

You turned me into colors I didn’t know existed.

What will become of me
when the final sinew that bound us,
made us whole,
is broken?

I run to stop my last grief from taking flight.

You’re still there, waiting for me to say yes,
let go into dreaming without you,
a true ending for a new beginning.

How do I find the courage to let you go?

You sunk so deeply into me there is no place I don’t find you
when I look within.

If I were to say a final goodbye to you,
it would have to be in a forest beloved by you,
crowded with birds and other creature angels you adored.
If you were to dissolve into a deep thicket of green,
then I think I could say goodbye,
at last.

You have given me a serenade for the world,
now I must remember to sing it
without you.
