Knitting The World Together
If there aren't enough of us doing the work of revealing and mending, discovering and threading through, human being forget who they are...
read or listen:
There have been people who knit the world together for as long as there have been people.
I know it seems like everything falls into place by itself everyday,
but the sacred world
the one that lets us see the soul of everything,
has to be tended carefully by people
who know just what to do.
If there aren't enough of us doing the work of
revealing and mending,
discovering and threading through,
human beings forget who they are
and what really matters.
That’s when everything starts to go wrong.
There have been times when most people loved the world-knitters.
We were popular,
we all had enough to eat,
we were recognized on the street
and embraced for the work we did.
Not like today.
We still have allies,
and there are places where we are welcome,
but most people don’t know who we are
or what we’re doing.
They see us worrying over nothing,
or endlessly preening the cat at a local bookstore,
or dancing alone to music nobody hears.
They don’t realize we’re bringing the world into being
right before their eyes.
We do this because we have looked into
the great emptiness that is at the heart of everything
and let it conjure through us
whatever it will.
Each moment of that sacred practice
becomes an invitation
for everyone else
to see the world as it wants to be seen.
That is how we all get to taste the sacred
as if it’s just part of the air
or woven into your bed covers
as you pull them up to your chest,
at the end of a long, cold day,
so you can finally rest,
in the peace of knowing
everything is holy.
Rarely have I felt more seen, Tim, and I know I'm not alone here. Thank you for reaching through the veil (into the great skein?) and gentling this one through. Floored.
Tim, this is so incredibly beautiful and I loved getting to hear your voice! Thank you for creating this, for sharing this, and for everything you do.
