Invitations

a single hoof-print cast into the bank...

One Cattail stands on the first day of Spring.

Of course it’s short,
almost embarrassingly so,
but it rises high above a carpet of
ribboned cousins
laid in manila bed-worn bundles
by late winter storms.

When the ground was still frozen
I came to the same spot
at the side the river and found
a single hoof-print cast into the bank
between spindly browned Wild Rose bushes,
dancing together like tangled crones.

No tracks coming or going,
just Winters singular invitation,
like a lone Cattail
beside the eternal river
as it carries Winters burdens
to wherever they go.

Springs invitation has begun.
